Hello:
A few years ago, I observed a situation where an employee at a global tech company received devastating news while at work—his father had just passed away. Shocked and heartbroken, he could barely process it.
His manager didn’t just offer condolences or a few days off. She sat with him. She listened. Then, without fanfare, she quietly booked his flight home and arranged for the team to cover for him, so he wouldn’t have to worry about missing work.
Later, when I asked her what was going through her mind at that moment, she simply said: “I didn’t just feel empathy for him—I felt compelled to do something – to help.”
That’s more than empathy. That’s compassion—the emotion that moves us to serve.

Empathy helps us feel what others feel and it makes us care. Compassion goes further—it commits us to act on that caring.
The best leaders aren’t just emotionally attuned. They take action. They serve. They are “servant leaders.”
So ask yourself: As a leader—how am I going to serve?
Because empathy and caring are not enough to change the world—it’s how we put that caring into action that matters.
